The transfer case is the heart of your 4WD or AWD system. It's what splits power between your front and rear axles and gives you the ability to shift into 4-high and 4-low when the road gets rough, or disappears entirely. In Permian Basin Transmissions, that's not a luxury, it's a necessity. When your transfer case starts to slip, grind, or refuse to engage, you don't just lose 4-wheel drive, you risk damage to your entire drivetrain. At Permian Basin Transmission, we know these systems inside and out and have the experience to service, repair, or rebuild yours correctly.

Keeping Your Transfer Case Healthy
Transfer case fluid is easy to overlook, it doesn't get changed as often as engine oil and there's no warning light dedicated to it. But degraded fluid is the number one cause of premature transfer case wear. Most manufacturers recommend a fluid change every 30,000 miles, and more frequently if you use 4WD regularly, tow heavy loads, or spend time on unpaved roads. During a transfer case service our team will drain and refill with the correct fluid specification for your vehicle, inspect all external seals and gaskets for leaks, check for unusual play or noise in the driveline, and assess the condition of the shift mechanism to make sure 4WD is engaging cleanly.
Signs your transfer case may need attention:
- Difficulty shifting into or out of 4-high or 4-low
- Grinding, growling, or humming noise that increases with speed
- The vehicle jumps out of 4WD on its own while driving
- Fluid pooling under the center of the vehicle
- Vibration or shuddering felt through the floor when accelerating
- Your 4WD indicator light is flashing, stuck on, or not coming on at all
If your 4WD system isn't behaving the way it should, don't wait until it fails completely. Bring it in and we'll tell you exactly what's going on.
